Sales figures reveal which region of Canada loves marijuana the most?


On June 8. 2020. OCS, an Ontario cannabis store in Canada, released a provincial fiscal annual report that revealed data on legal cannabis sales and consumer preferences in Ontario, Canada’s largest province. The main contents are as follows:

1. The total sales of provincial cannabis in the OCS fiscal year is close to 400 million Canadian dollars (297.6 million US dollars)

2. The entertainment cannabis sales products are mainly dried flowers, followed by concentrates, steam products, and edible products;

3. Aurora cannabis brand has the largest sales volume of dried flowers in online and offline retail stores;

4. In March, when a large-scale outbreak of the new coronavirus COVID-19.’s online sales surged.

OCS is the only online cannabis retailer in Ontario, Canada, and one of the few private cannabis distributors in the province that has been growing cannabis sales. The report issued by OCS covers the sale of legal cannabis in Ontario for the first full fiscal year (2019.04.01-2020.03.31).



Marijuana flowering high

Ontario sold 35.1 million grams of legal marijuana within 12 months, with total sales of $385.1 million. Of these, 7.2 million grams (about 20%) were sold through at a price of 71.4 million Canadian dollars; the remaining 27.9 million grams were sold through private retail stores with a total value of 313.7 million Canadian dollars.

Dried cannabis flowers account for the vast majority of Ontario’s total cannabis sales (about 79%), and more than half (about 52%) are products with THC content exceeding 20%.

Dried flowers: CAD 274.9 million (71.4%)

Mosaic volume: 42.6 million Canadian dollars (11%)

Edible oil: 26.3 million Canadian dollars (6.8%)

Capsules: CAD 11.3 million (2.9%)

In addition, the sales volume of cannabis 2.0 products is relatively small, mainly because these products were not launched until the fourth quarter of the annual calculation of OCS, and the supply is often restricted.

The report states that the sales data of cannabis 2.0 products shows the enthusiasm of consumers, but it may take some time to develop before they can see the identifiable directions and trends:

Vapes: 14.8 million Canadian dollars (3.8%)

Edible food: 3.8 million Canadian dollars (1%)

Drinks: CAD 410.000 (less than 1%)

External products: 40.000 Canadian dollars (less than 1%)

Hemp brand buy buy buy

The OCS report pointed out that the most popular cannabis brands in Ontario are Aurora and Redecan.

Dried flowers are the most popular cannabis products. Aurora Cannabis’ San Rafael ’71 brand is the leader in both online and offline retail sales channels, accounting for 8% of total sales, and Redecan brand accounts for total sales. 7%.

In the online sales channel, dried flowers from PureSunfarms brand accounted for 6% of sales, followed by CanweyGrowth brand Tweed, which accounted for 5% of sales.

In offline retail stores, Organigram’s Edison cannabis brand received 7% of sales, of which Pure Sunfarms accounted for 6%.

On the line, Flowr brand’s mosaic rolls lead in sales, followed by Aurora, Aphria’s Solei brand, CannTrust’s Liiv brand and Redecan’s mosaic rolls, which are 8%, 7%, 6% and 5%, respectively.

In offline retail stores, Mosaic Roll sales are dominated by Aurora (12%), Tweed (8%), RIFF, Aphria (7%), Organigram Trailblazer (6%), and Edison (5%).

In the sales data of cannabis 2.0 products, Aurora’s Drift brand accounted for 27% of online sales and 25% of offline retail stores, ranking first in cannabis edible products.

The second is Solei brand edible cannabis oil, which accounts for 24% and 23% of sales in the two channels.

The third is the Redecan brand vape, which accounted for 14% and 24% of sales, respectively.



Cannabis store opened

In April 2019. only 9 cannabis retail stores in Ontario opened, and the promotion speed was relatively slow.

As of March 31. 2020. a total of 53 marijuana retail stores had opened, providing marijuana services to 14.7 million people in Ontario.

After the local government opened the cannabis market in the spring of 2020. the construction of cannabis retail stores accelerated significantly. The OCS report pointed out that there are currently 87 stores in the province.

The OCS report states that increasing the number of legal cannabis retail stores in Ontario is the main means of combating the illegal cannabis black market.

OCS’s wholesale price for cannabis retailers is 25% lower than online sales prices, and retailers can set their own prices.

In the first quarter, OCS online average selling price was 9.48 Canadian dollars per gram. By the fourth quarter, it had dropped to 7.48 Canadian dollars. This is lower than the average price of 9.61 Canadian dollars in the last quarter of cannabis retail stores.

It is understood that the average legal cannabis retail store in Ontario sells an average of 3.100 grams of cannabis per day, with an average daily sales of $25.000.
