Isle of Man Sets Age Limit for Vape Purchases

Share

The Isle of Man has officially set the age limit at 18 for purchasing vaping products, aligning with similar laws introduced in the UK in 2016. This new regulation prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from buying vaping devices, accessories, or e-liquids, regardless of whether the liquid contains nicotine.

Key Measures and Legal Implications

  • It is now illegal for adults over 18 to purchase vaping products for minors.
  • From September 1st, there will be a ban on the public display and advertising of vaping products in any locations where minors are allowed.

Comments from the Cabinet Office

Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan emphasized that these measures are crucial for the “current and future health of young people.” This statement highlights the government’s commitment to preventing the early onset of vaping among youth.

Exemptions and Future Regulations

The ban on display and advertising will not apply to wholesalers or specialist vaping shops, provided these establishments do not permit entry to persons under 18. This careful consideration ensures that adult consumers can still access vaping products without promoting them to a younger audience.

The Manx government introduced these laws to the House of Keys in June last year after a public consultation held in December 2022. A significant 73% of respondents supported the ban on sales to minors, indicating strong public backing for the measures.

Minister Lord-Brennan also noted that while the Isle aligns with the UK on the sale of vaping products, it will go a step further by implementing stricter point-of-sale restrictions. This approach aims to further shield children and young people from the exposure to vaping products in retail settings.
