According to foreign media reports, the National Institutes of health released a study report on e-cigarette addiction on its website: “comparison of e-cigarettes and cigarettes – a horizontal study of American adults”, indicating that the addiction of e-cigarettes is significantly lower than that of cigarettes.

The study was conducted by scholars from the University of Pittsburgh and the peace Institute. Scholars from South Carolina Medical University, Rand Corporation and Johns Hopkins University all made suggestions for the study.

They conducted large-scale sampling, and grouped “pure electronic cigarette smokers”, “pure cigarette smokers” and “dual users” who used electronic cigarettes and cigarettes at the same time, so as to observe and compare their situation during the period of quitting smoking.

The results show that the dependence of “dual users” on e-cigarettes is significantly less than that of cigarettes. In addition, compared with “pure electronic smokers” and “pure cigarette smokers”, the “pure electronic smokers” were significantly easier to get rid of the addiction.

According to the study, “e-cigarettes are always less addictive than cigarettes.”

“As a device for delivering nicotine, it’s normal for electronic cigarettes to have a certain degree of dependence,” the study said. Health authorities have said that the harm of smoking is not nicotine, but tobacco burning, smoke contains a lot of toxic substances, smokers often exposed to these toxic substances

From the perspective of tobacco harm reduction, if e-cigarettes are to replace cigarettes successfully and reduce the health risk of users, then a certain degree of dependence may be necessary.

People transfer their addiction to cigarettes to e-cigarettes. In this way, people who smoke cigarettes gradually turn into e-smokers.

It is observed that the people who are more dependent on e-cigarettes are mainly those who have just changed from cigarettes to e-cigarettes, which belongs to “dependence transfer”. When they use e-cigarettes more interchangeably and in large quantities, they may also successfully transition from cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Even at this time, they use e-cigarettes very frequently, and their addiction is still lower than that of smokers.

“E-cigarettes are less addictive than cigarettes, which means that if smokers transition from cigarettes to e-cigarettes, their dependence on nicotine will be reduced and their health risks will be reduced. It’s also a step closer: when smokers switch to e-cigarettes, they’ll find it easier for them to give up e-cigarettes completely next – if they want to. ” The study authors stress.
