More than 10 percent of women in the United States smoke or smoke e-cigarettes, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
However, the number varies from state to state. For example, less than 7% of women smoke in California, 75% in West Virginia and 20% in Kentucky and Oklahoma.
According to the report, women aged 45-64 currently have the highest smoking rate, at 14%. The smoking rate of American Indian and Alaskan Aboriginal women was 21%.
“Although the female smoking rate has declined in the past year, the main tobacco product used by women in each state is still combustible tobacco,” the agency said
In the report, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention surveyed nearly 75000 adult women aged 18 and older from 50 states and Washington, D.C. Participants were asked about their use of tobacco products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes, in the past year. Nationwide, less than 12% of female participants reported smoking. Among them, 10% smoked cigarettes, nearly 2% of women said they used e-cigarettes, and more than 1% of participants said they used both products at the same time.
