Health Canada Authorizes First Nicotine Pouch for Smoking Cessation

Share

Health Canada has taken a notable step by authorizing Nicoventures Trading to market Zonnic, a nicotine pouch, as a smoking cessation aid. This marks the first time a nicotine pouch has been licensed as a Natural Health Product and a form of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

What are Nicotine Pouches?

Nicotine pouches, resembling tea bags, are placed under the upper lip for 30-60 minutes to deliver a dose of nicotine. Free of tobacco and odor, and requiring no spitting unlike snuff, these pouches are made from vegetable fibers with added nicotine and flavors. Their global popularity is rising due to their harm reduction potential.

The Efficacy of Nicotine Pouches as NRTs

Despite some countries’ hesitation towards nicotine pouches, studies have shown their effectiveness in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms without combustion. This discreet and convenient option offers a safer way to wean off smoking, especially in regions with high oral tobacco risks.

Exclusive Distribution by Imperial Tobacco Canada

Imperial Tobacco Canada (ITCAN), a subsidiary of British American Tobacco (BAT), will handle the exclusive distribution of Zonnic in Canada. ITCAN’s President and CEO, Frank Silva, considers this a significant milestone for the nation, as it is the first nicotine pouch to receive Health Canada’s approval.

Nicotine Delivery Effectiveness

Nicoventures’ submission to Health Canada included a pharmacokinetics study demonstrating the effectiveness of Zonnic’s nicotine delivery, comparable to other leading NRTs. This positions Zonnic as a viable option for those seeking to quit smoking.

The Role of NPs in Achieving Smokefree Goals

Silva also discusses the role of products like Zonnic in achieving the goal of becoming smokefree by 2035, drawing parallels with Sweden’s success using snus for smoking cessation. He emphasizes the importance of embracing less harmful nicotine products and supportive policies.

Awareness and Use Among Young Adults

A study on young adults’ awareness and use of nicotine pouches found that about a third are aware of them, and around 10% have used them. The study highlights gender and product use patterns influencing awareness and intentions to use, with advertising exposure playing a significant role.

Perceptions and Stereotypes

The study also revealed common motives for use, such as quitting smoking and reducing tobacco smell, with pouches perceived as less harmful and more socially acceptable than other products. However, stereotypes still influence the consumer demographic, particularly among female users.

This authorization by Health Canada signifies a crucial development in smoking cessation strategies, offering a new, potentially safer alternative for smokers looking to quit.
