Man Hospitalized in Brazil Due to Severe Hemoptysis Possibly Linked to E-Cigarettes

Share

A man in Brasília has been hospitalized for a month due to severe symptoms of hemoptysis, characterized by the presence of blood in coughed-up mucus. Doctors suspect that this condition may be a result of his long-term use of e-cigarettes.

Despite being prohibited for sale in Brazil, the man had been using e-cigarettes for the past three months. However, a month ago, he started experiencing coughing fits with blood, prompting him to seek medical attention. After visiting a private pulmonary doctor who found no underlying issues, the doctor advised him to go home. However, his symptoms persisted and worsened, so he sought help at the emergency room of the North Wing Regional Hospital. In one instance, he even coughed up 600 milliliters of blood.

Brazil has implemented regulations since 2009 that ban the sale, import, and promotion of electronic vaping devices, including accessories and pods. Nevertheless, the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency has initiated a public consultation to consider lifting the ban on e-cigarettes. The consultation, which began on December 12th, will continue until February 9th, allowing for 60 days of public participation.
