Farmers in South Carolina can apply to grow hemp starting January 1

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture will accept applications for hemp farming permits for the 2021 growing season from Jan. 1 through Feb. 28, 2021.

U.S. students can get hemp lesson

Students in Pennsylvania, USA public schools will have the chance to learn about hemp while making sustainable plastic using the plant, state officials said. The state’s Departments of Agriculture and Education jointly announced the hemp lesson, one of several options being offered to students in kindergarten through high school during a virtual farm show set for January. Students will learn why hemp cellulose represents a more biodegradable and non-toxic alternative to the petroleum-based plastics. Lessons are also being offered in organic farming and how to raise livestock.

First grower license is granted in U.S. Virgin Islands

The Virgin Islands Industrial Hemp Commission has awarded the U.S. territory’s first commercial hemp grower license and hemp seed distributor permit under a plan approved earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The licensee, Crucian Hemp Farms LLP, said it will grow five acres of hemp at its 125-acre farm in Enfield Green in the first year, and then gradually ramp up fields.

Almost $3M invested in Rockingham Co. hemp fiber, CBD extraction facility

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – A Rockingham County hemp facility is making a big investment, which can help local growers and retailers.

Nearly $3 million will help Pure Shenandoah in Elkton expand its CBD extraction and hemp-fiber processing.

Some grant funding from Virginia and Rockingham Co. will support the project, which will use 100% of hemp from Virginia farmers and bring two dozen jobs to the Shenandoah Valley.
