Vaping Vs IQOS in quit smoking attempts – which option is the best according to the science?
It seems the Heat Not Burn Product IQOS is not as popular as refillable e-cigarettes according to a new UK scientific study.
Researchers from Queen Mary University of London say whilst it delivers less nicotine than lit cigarettes, those tested preferred using refillable vape kits despite IQOS delivering nicotine faster.
The team compared the IQOS with a refillable vape kit containing vape juice with a 20mg nicotine content, and the US version of JUUL [up to 59mg nicotine] and found the majority of smokers did not have their cravings slowed using the HNB product.
The results showed that whilst IQOS could be effective in stop smoking attempts, those tested preferred refillable vape kits.
Study lead author, Professor Peter Hajek said:
IQOS is likely to be useful to help smokers quit, particularly in countries like Japan, where e-cigarettes are banned; but in countries where e-cigarettes are available, they are likely to remain the more popular choice.
I’ve used an IQOS and actually quite liked the experience – I’m sure that will piss a few people off lol.
The whole HNB saga has been a bone of contention in the vape scene for an age, but the UK Government says it is 95% safer than smoking – so for me anything that gets smokers to quit has to be a good thing….if it’s as safe as vaping.
Still, it’s good to see refillable vape kits are still the tool of choice if you really want to quit smoking – cheaper too 😉

UK Smoking Rates Soar After Lockdowns
The UK is in danger of not meeting its 2030 stop smoking target following a massive increase in new smokers.
The stats show a staggering 600,000 more smokers are predicted on the back of the stresses and strains caused by COVID-19 lockdowns.
Worryingly the main bulk of new smokers comes from the 18 to 24 year-old range, who say it’s due to the fear of unemployment, money worries and mental health issues.
Figures show the number of UK smokers rose from 14.8 per cent to 15 per cent in the last year with 31.8% of those quizzed saying they’ve smoked at some point, compared to 24.3% in 2019.
The dire warning of the UK Governments target of just 5% of smokers within the population by 2030 looks unlikely unless action is taken.
Richard Sloggett founder of think tank Future Health, and a former UK Government advisor said:
A major package of national action needs to be introduced this year including local targeted support to get back on track to eliminating smoking in England.
Doing so will be fundamental to levelling-up the health inequalities that have been so clearly exposed by the pandemic.
Whilst some areas of the UK such as Hart in Hampshire and St Albans in Hertfordshire are still on course, other towns and cities such as Lincoln, Blackpool and Great Yarmouth are way above the national smoking average.
Mr Sloggett said:
Some areas of the country are currently four or five times above the stated five per cent ambition level and such local variation presents a major barrier to delivering on the target.
John Dunne, director of the UK Vaping Industry Association [UKKVIA] was quick to respond:
The leveling up agenda coupled with fair and proportionate regulatory changes, as proposed in the UKVIA Blueprint For Better Regulation, could significantly reduce smoking rates.
The UKVIA stands ready to work with the Government to effectively champion vaping to support these goals.
Let’s hope the UK Government and indeed local councils embrace vaping as the best way to quit and promote the hell out of e-cigarettes.

Vaping Increases Asthma..? I Call BS!
Once again the media has been filled with yet another vaping scare story and this time it’s all about e-cigarettes increasing the risk of an asthma attack.
As yet I’ve been unable to find any experts counter comments on this – when I do I’ll print them – however I do have a personal story to tell.
I was diagnosed with asthma 20-years ago – due to heavy smoking and stress.
I quit smoking over 10 years ago with a couple of temporary lapses in between.
Whilst smoking I needed my asthma inhaler 2 or 3 times a day.
The only time I need it now is maybe and I mean maybe if I get man flu.
I can now hike 15 to 20 miles and take on very steep hills without any wheezing, puffing, panting or chest pain.
And I vape heavy all day every day…
Weird huh…
It’s almost like the science behind this latest ‘vaping bad’ media frenzy has forgotten e-liquid contains PG – Propylene Glycol – which as crazy as it sounds, when vaporized can be used to treat pneumonia, influenza, and other respiratory diseases – that’s the science.
In fact PG has been used in some asthma inhalers and nebulizers since the 50’s…
Sure my experience is only from a personal point of view, but I’m sure many of you out there have experienced the same – let me know 😉
I’m 60 this year and I can truly say my lungs have never been clearer…maybe it’s a coincidence…
