The savage growth of electronic cigarette industry brings many hidden hazards to customers, and the industry needs to be regulated and standardized in China in 2020.

China’s regulation of e-cigarettes is also gradually advancing. Some places have begun to make a clear definition of e-cigarettes. It will include vape in the category of “tobacco products”. On October 1, the newly revised regulations on the control of smoking in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone came into effect. It is clear that electronic cigarette refers to a device that vaporizes and delivers a mixture of nicotine (or no nicotine), propylene glycol and other chemicals to the user’s lungs, which belongs to tobacco products.

At the same time, the national standard information public service platform shows that the national standard plan “electronic cigarette” and the national standard plan Determination of nicotine, propylene glycol and glycerol gas chromatography in electronic cigarette liquid which were formulated in 2017 have reached the approval stage.

According to another source, the National Health Commission is working with relevant departments to carry out research on the regulation of e-cigarettes, and plans to regulate e-cigarettes through legislation.

According to the prospective industry research institute, the release and implementation of national standards for electronic cigarette industry will provide evidence for industry development and accelerate the clearing and elimination of substandard enterprises.

On the other hand, the industry-standard will clearly stipulate the limit values of nicotine, propylene glycol, extraction solvent and other substances in the electronic atomizing e-liquid, which is expected to reduce the release of harmful substances in the electronic vaporizers to a certain extent.

The vape brand salesperson told China Business Daily that the introduction of e-cigarette standards in 2020 means that the non-conforming products of e-cigarette will face delisting, and the e-cigarette brand has rules to follow in product design, production and sales, which is conducive to the sound development of the industry.

Lin Hanzhong said that the regulation of e-cigarettes needs multi-department cooperation. In addition, the regulation of different categories of e-cigarettes should be divided into different categories, such as whether they contain nicotine or not.
