UK’s New Vape Tax: Prices May Skyrocket by 2026

Share

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt from the Conservative Party recently dropped a bombshell in the UK’s Spring Budget—come October 2026, vapers might feel the pinch with a hefty new tax on vaping products.

What’s Changing?

Right now, vaping products in the UK only face the standard VAT. However, the future looks a tad smoky with the introduction of a ‘products levy’, akin to that on traditional tobacco products. This tax would impact both imports and domestic manufacturers, a strategy designed to keep vapes out of the budget of youngsters.

The heart of the tax focuses on e-liquids, setting a levy based on nicotine content. Expect additional charges ranging from £1 to £3 per 10ml, adding to the current 20% VAT. With fifteen European countries already enforcing similar taxes and the EU planning a bloc-wide levy, it seems the UK is catching up with a trend.

Cigarettes Aren’t Getting Off Easy Either

In tandem with the vape tax, there’s a hike in tobacco duty. The idea? To ensure vaping remains a more wallet-friendly option compared to smoking. Jeremy Hunt expressed his intention to discourage non-smokers from vaping while encouraging smokers to switch by balancing the tax landscape.

Public Reaction: Controversy in the Air

When the announcement hit YouTube, it wasn’t just the smoke that was stirred. Vaping advocates and the public alike aired their grievances. Many question the health justification for the vape tax, seeing it more as a profit-driven move rather than a public health initiative.

Analysts Weigh In

According to Citi analysts, this new tax regime could funnel profits towards big tobacco firms, aligning with the UK’s recent move to ban disposable vapes to protect kids. The combined annual revenue from tobacco and vape taxes is projected to exceed £500 million by 2028.

As smoking rates continue to fall, one commenter hit the nail on the head: “Of course they’re taxing e-cigarettes. They’re losing tax on tobacco because fewer people are smoking. They’ve got to get their salaries somewhere.”
