KT&G Provides Essential Water Purification Units to Ugandan Primary Schools

Share

KT&G, a prominent global corporation, is making significant contributions to social welfare by providing 400 environmentally friendly water purification devices to 94 primary schools in Uganda. These devices, valued at KRW110 million ($81,406), were officially distributed during a ceremony held in Hoima City, Uganda, which is known for its tobacco-growing regions. The event saw participation from Park Hyeon-seok, KT&G’s Tanzania materials branch manager, among other local officials.

Addressing Critical Water Needs in Uganda

According to Uganda’s Water Environment Authority, out of Uganda’s population of approximately 49.9 million, about 9.2 million lack access to safe drinking water. This scarcity of clean water leads to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever, which are major contributors to the country’s high infant mortality rates and other severe social issues.

The gravity-fed filtration devices provided by KT&G are designed to significantly improve drinking water hygiene in Uganda. These units will replace traditional water purification methods that require boiling water using wood and charcoal, thereby also reducing carbon emissions by up to 3,500 tons annually.

KT&G’s Ongoing Commitment to Global Social Responsibility

KT&G has a history of engaging in social responsibility efforts, particularly in developing nations where it operates. In 2021, the company supported a Tanzanian primary school with 1,300 water purification units. KT&G’s global CSR activities are diverse, including supporting vocational training centers in Indonesia, establishing agroforestry education centers in Mongolia, and constructing schools in Laos.

These initiatives are part of KT&G’s philosophy of ‘Growing Together,’ aiming to enhance the quality of life and sustainable development of communities worldwide. Shim Young-Ah, director of KT&G’s ESG management office, emphasized the company’s role as a global corporate citizen committed to addressing and supporting the needs of countries requiring assistance.

The recent support for Ugandan schools highlights KT&G’s dedication to improving sanitary conditions and overall public health through strategic and meaningful contributions to water accessibility and quality. This effort is expected to have a lasting impact on the communities it touches, demonstrating KT&G’s commitment to fostering global well-being and development.
