Illinois Enacts Public Vaping Ban Starting January

Share

Illinois is set to enforce a significant change in its public health policy with the initiation of a vaping ban in public places starting next month. This move is a continuation of the state’s efforts to regulate smoking and vaping.

Expanding the Smoke-Free Illinois Act

The Smoke-Free Illinois Act, which has been in effect since 2007, initially focused on banning indoor smoking of cigars and cigarettes, as well as in the vicinity of entrances. The act is now being expanded to include e-cigarettes and vapes, with the new regulations taking effect on January 1st.

State Senator Julie Morrison’s Perspective

State Senator Julie Morrison, the sponsor of this bill in the Senate, expressed her views on the matter. She highlighted the addictive nature of e-cigarettes and emphasized the progress made in changing the public’s perception of tobacco. According to Morrison, the upcoming ban on indoor e-cigarette usage marks a proud moment in the state’s health policy.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

The new regulations carry a penalty for non-compliance: individuals caught using e-cigarettes in public places will face a fine of $100 for the first offense. This measure is part of the state’s broader strategy to discourage the use of vaping products in public spaces.

Additional Legislative Changes

In addition to the vaping ban, the legislation signed into law in July 2019 also includes a change in the legal age for purchasing tobacco products in Illinois. The legal age has been raised from 18 to 21, reflecting the state’s commitment to public health and the well-being of its younger population.
