Canuck Vapers Brace for a Price Hike in July—Fruity Flavors Remain Unchecked

Share

As of July 1st, vaping enthusiasts across Canada should prepare for a bit of sticker shock. The Canadian federal government, in its recent budget announcement, has unveiled a plan to ramp up excise taxes on vape products. Depending on where you’re puffing, expect to cough up an extra 12 to 24 cents per milliliter of vape juice. This move aims to inject an additional $310 million into government coffers over the next five years.

What’s the Deal with the Price Hike?

Despite Ottawa’s good intentions to curb youth vaping, the reaction hasn’t been all thumbs up. A public health expert pointed out that the price hike might just be a drop in the ocean, barely making a dent due to it aligning too closely with recent inflation rates. His take? “We could—and probably should—crank that tax up even more.

Interestingly, a study on U.S. e-cigarette taxes highlighted a quirky side effect: for every $1 tax increase on e-cigarettes, usage drops by about 12%. But here’s the kicker—traditional cigarette consumption ticks up. Canada, foreseeing this loophole, has already upped tobacco taxes back in April, adding an extra $5.49 per carton of 200 cigarettes.

Flavor Ban: The Rule That Never Was

Back in June 2021, Health Canada laid down the law—no more sweeteners in vapes and only tobacco, menthol, and mint flavors allowed. But despite the official ban, fruity and exotic flavors are still finding their way onto shelves, leading many to believe that the flavor ban is more myth than reality.

Nicotine Pouches: The New Controversial Kid on the Block

Just when it seemed like business as usual, the vaping scene got shaken up with the introduction of Zonnic nicotine pouches on July 18, 2023. Marketed as a health product for smoking cessation, these pouches face zero sales restrictions, making them a hit among the youth due to their variety of flavors.

Canada’s Vaping Laws: A Patchwork of Policies

As Canada’s new health minister takes office, there’s a fresh push to tighten regulations around vaping. From flavor restrictions to advertising limits, the goal is clear: safeguard the youth. This comes amidst a backdrop of global markets striving for a balance between taxation and regulation to keep the vaping scene under control.

What’s Next for Canadian Vapers?

With ongoing debates and policy tweaks, Canadian vaping regulations are becoming as complex and nuanced as the flavors they aim to control. As we navigate these foggy waters, one thing remains certain: the landscape of vaping in Canada is poised for change.
