In a recent interview at the Global Tobacco & Nicotine Forum (GTNF) 2024, Nancy Loucas, Executive Coordinator of the Coalition of Asia Pacific Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA), voiced concerns over the exclusion of consumer perspectives in global tobacco control policies. Loucas, a seasoned advocate with over two decades of experience, emphasised the importance of evidence-based approaches and consumer representation in harm reduction strategies.

“It’s crucial that consumer voices are heard in the development of tobacco control policies,” Loucas stated. “Our experiences and perspectives are invaluable in creating effective harm reduction strategies”.

Addressing the issue of consumer exclusion, Loucas remarked, “The practice of labelling differing opinions as ‘industry influence’ is counterproductive. It stifles meaningful dialogue and ignores the lived experiences of millions”.

“CAPHRA’s mission is to represent consumers and promote harm reduction strategies that have proven effective in helping smokers quit,” Loucas explained. “We’re not aligned with any industry; our focus is solely on public health”.
The Importance of Diverse Voices
Loucas stressed the significance of including various perspectives in policy discussions. “Effective public health policies require input from all stakeholders, including consumers. Excluding voices doesn’t lead to better outcomes”.
Call for Inclusive Dialogue
“We call on global health bodies to engage in open, transparent discussions that include consumer advocates. Only through inclusive dialogue can we develop policies that truly serve public health interests”
