PMI and Medicago End Partnership Following Covid-19 Vaccine Rejection

Tobacco corporations, vaccines and governments don’t mix well and we applaud the expulsion of Philip Morris from the Medicago collaboration,” said Les Hagen, the executive director of a not-for-profit organization ASH Canada, said in a recent statement.

Medicago, which is owned by Mitsubishi Chemical, Philip Morris and Glaxo, has developed Covifenz, the world’s first plant-based Covid vaccine. The vaccine was cleared for use by the Canadian government, however the government of Quebec previously said it wanted to help Medicago replace its shareholder Philip Morris International with another investor so that the biotech firm can distribute its Covifenz Covid-19 vaccine internationally.

Covid-19 vaccines

Meanwhile in 2020, it was announced that KBP, an American subsidiary of PMI’s competitor British American Tobacco (BAT), was carrying out clinical trials on a potential vaccine for the Coronavirus. BAT said at the time that it was “hopeful that, with the right partners and support from government agencies, between 1 and 3 million doses of the vaccine could be manufactured per week.”

The vaccine is using BAT’s proprietary, a fast-growing tobacco plant technology, which is safer than conventional vaccine production. In the press release announcing the vaccine, it was emphasized that while KBP is a commercial operation, the company’s intention for the Covid-19 vaccine project is that any work related to it will be “carried out on a not for profit basis.”

New Study Concludes That Vaping Nicotine Was NOT The Cause of EVALI Deaths & Illnesses

With nicotine vaping still being wrongly blamed for the US EVALI deaths and lung injuries of 2019, will tobacco harm reduction opponents ever listen?

Three years after the EVALI outbreak began in the US, a major new study has concluded that the condition was NOT caused by vaping nicotine.

The illness claimed 68 lives and saw almost 3,000 hospital admissions with patients suffering from unexplained chest pain and breathing difficulties.

US public health agency the CDC was quick to blame vaping and named the illness EVALI – E-cigarette, or Vaping, product use[1]Associated Lung Injury.

Even when it was determined that EVALI was caused by vaping black market THC oils contaminated with vitamin E acetate (VEA), vaping nicotine was still blamed.

Now a new study published in the Drug and Alcohol Review has concluded that vaping nicotine was not the cause of the deaths and illnesses.

Lead author, Dr Colin Mendelsohn, said despite VEA being the source of the illness, vaping nicotine was also held responsible.

He said:

“Vaping opponents, including the Australian government and state health departments, have continued to maintain fear and doubt that vaping nicotine also causes EVALI. “VEA is not soluble in nicotine e-liquids and has never been detected in nicotine e-liquids.

Dr Mendelsohn, the founding Chairman of the Australian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association, added:

“No chemicals in nicotine vapes have been identified which could cause EVALI. “Unfounded claims that nicotine vaping caused EVALI have been used to justify restrictive policies to reduce the uptake of vaping and this has been harmful to public health.”

The study highlighted that 14 percent of vapers with EVALI denied vaping THC, which led to the assumption that nicotine vapes were also to blame.

However, Dr Mendelsohn said people often denied using THC (especially where it is illegal) and said that investigations had found that this was also true of the EVALI outbreak.

He went on:

“Some THC vapers initially claimed to have used nicotine-only but were later found to have used THC. “Furthermore, there have been no verified cases of EVALI from vaping nicotine before, during or after the outbreak and the composition of nicotine vaping liquids has remained unchanged during this time.”

In Australia the federal Health Department website continues to incorrectly link nicotine vaping with EVALI. The government has not updated the site despite 31 Australian health professionals writing to the Chief Medical Officer to point out that their advice was inaccurate.

In light of the new research, Dr Mendelsohn has called on the Australian government and the media to ‘correct the continued miscommunication’ about the causes of the EVALI outbreak.

Fatal Police Shooting: Did cops mistake vape pen for a gun?

When a suspect was shot dead in Ohio, the police officer initially thought he was holding a gun, but it may have been nothing more than a harmless vape.

An investigation is underway after an American police officer, who shot an unarmed suspect dead, may have mistaken his vape pen for a gun.

The incident happened when police entered the apartment of 20-year-old Donovan Lewis at around 2.30am to serve an arrest warrant on him.

Police bodycam footage shows Canine Unit officer Ricky Anderson – a 30-year veteran with the division – entering the suspect’s apartment and opening fi re as Lewis sits up and raises his hands.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant told a news conference the shot was fired when the police officer saw that the suspect had something in his hand.

Lewis was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he later died of his injuries. Bryant said that a device resembling a ‘vape pen’ was ‘found on the bed right next to him’.

Police also confirmed that no weapon had been found and an investigation is now being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Bryant added:

“Donovan Lewis lost his life. As a parent I sympathise and I grieve with his mother and with our community.”

Columbus Police said in a statement:

“On Tuesday August 30, Columbus Police officers attempted to serve a felony warrant at an apartment.

“Once inside, officers confronted a male, at which time one Columbus Police officer discharged their weapon, striking the male.

“Officers rendered aid to the male until medics arrived on scene and transported him to hospital in critical condition. The male was pronounced deceased at 3.19 AM.”

Columbus police said that Lewis had been wanted on multiple warrants for offences including domestic violence, assault and improper handling of a firearm.

Documents Reveal That The FDA May Ultimately Authorize Vape Flavours

New documents indicate the FDA’s ties to Big Tobacco and its tendency to favor the largest companies, instead of the smaller businesses.

Documents obtained by Filter earlier this year, had clearly indicated a bias towards flavoured vape products. While PMTAs for small to medium-sized businesses were being rejected by the thousands, these documents revealed that PMTA reviewers had created a method to get through a backlog of millions of PMTAs, enabling them to quickly dismiss many of them without even reviewing their submitted documents.

Called the “Fatal Flaw” strategy, the method would involve a “a database query to identify the top twelve manufacturers with the largest number of pending” PMTAs for non-tobacco flavoured e-liquid products not in scientific review—and determine if any of them contained randomized control trials (RCTs) or longitudinal cohort studies,” explained another recent article.

The FDA’s ties to Big Tobacco

Meanwhile despite possible plans to authorize flavours, the new documents discussed by Filter also indicate the agency’s ties to Big Tobacco and its tendency to favor the largest companies, instead of the smaller businesses.

“Though the general plan remains consistent with the FDA’s broad messaging—that its PMTA review process would focus on the companies with the largest market share—it reveals how rigid that prioritization became,” reported Filter.

“‘As the application submission deadline approaches, OS anticipates a significant increase in the number of premarket applications for all three premarket pathways,” the plan reads. “In preparation for the increase … OS determined that updates to the review process are necessary to ensure that we can efficiently initiate and complete review of as many applications as possible during the one-year compliance period while applying the same scientific rigor.’

The PMTA’s process guiding principles

The memo includes a list of “guiding principles”:

Simple: Selected approach should be easy to manage, explain, & implement
Defendable: Decisions are not arbitrary & capricious
Flexible: Process offers the opportunity to easily pivot and adjust the strategy, if needed
Supports our public health goals: 1. Minimize youth initiation 2. Ensure a variety of ENDS have an opportunity to remain on the market to facilitate adult smokers switching to less harmful tobacco products”

Ultimate Guide on How to fix Disposable Vape Pens in 2022 • VAPE HK

Vaping offers a long list of benefits, including lowering the risk of cancer, heart disease, erectile dysfunction and schizophrenia, among other risk factors linked to smoking cigarettes. While vaping is safer and offers vapers a wide variety of flavors to choose from compared to smoking cigarettes, one cannot enjoy vaping to the fullest if your disposable vape pen isn’t hitting or filling your mouth with disposable vape burnt flavor.

Because of the astronomical rate at which the disposable vape industry is gaining popularity worldwide, different brands of vape pens have flooded the markets — online stores and neighborhood stores; making it easier to get lost in the ocean of vape brands out there.

As the famous saying goes, “too many cooks spoil the broth” — hold that thought and bring it home to how high-quality and reliable disposable vape brands like BecoVape are increasingly becoming difficult to find. If your e-cig is getting in the way of your vaping pleasure and you are not sure what to do about it, you no longer have to lose sleep over it because we will share common vape pen problems with you and how to deal with them.

Here Is A Rundown of The Common Problems with Disposable Vapes We Will Discuss in This Piece.

Disposable Vape Not HittingDisposable Vape Weak HitsDead BatteryDisposable Vape Leaking (Liquid Run Out)The airflow Sensor Isn’t SensitiveDisposable Vape Burned FlavorBlock the Airflow VentBreak Air Bubbles

Let’s look at each of these problems and how to fix them. Shall we?

Disposable Vape Not Hitting/Disposable Vape Weak Hits

Top on the list of problems that disposable vape pens throw at vapers is that they stop hitting or produce weak hits. When your disposable vape pen stops hitting, here are the  possible causes you should look into:

Air bubbles are trapped around the coil or in the cartridge

If your disposable vape is not firing or hitting as it should, it could be that air bubbles are trapped in the cartridge and around the coil, hindering airflow. While this may cause you so much inconvenience, the solution to this problem will most likely stun you — give it a tap. Yes, you read that right. Repeatedly but gently tap where the cartridge is located. Doing so will free up the air passage and restore airflow in the unit.

Debris is clogging the mouthpiece and hindering airflow

Another culprit to look out for is debris. Because disposable vape pens are portable and can fit almost anywhere (pockets and bags) while you are on the move, it is not unusual to pick up debris (including fluff and dust particles) that can clog the mouthpiece. One way to deal with this is to assess the airway and use a safety pin or toothpick to remove debris. Easy peasy.

You bought a fake disposable vape pen

Last but not least, you might have bought yourself a fake disposable vape pen. Because of the ocean of vape pens or e-cigarettes available in the market at ridiculously low prices, you might end up purchasing a low-quality or outright fake vape pen. Another possibility is faulty internal components like the coil and battery. Often, this could be due to prolonged stay in the manufacturer’s warehouse or mishandling/dropping during transportation. Whatever the case, investing in a new disposable vape pen would do you a lot more good and save you the stress of waiting for repairs and replacement parts.

Dead Battery: Is Your Battery Getting Drained Fast?

Could your battery be dead? When you draw on your vape pen, you should see an indicator light glowing or lighting up on the vape pen. If this light isn’t coming on, it is usually a sign that your battery is drained. This isn’t much of a big deal if your vape pen is rechargeable — in this case, you can charge it, and it will be up and running. However, suppose your unit is not rechargeable. In that case, that usually spells the end of that unit, and you would be better off getting yourself a new disposable vape pen with a more robust battery capacity.

While you are at it, you should also bear in mind other factors that run down disposable vape pen batteries:

OverchargingExposing the unit to high temperaturesBringing the unit in contact with metals, andTearing the battery wrapper

Liquid Run Out

Just as humans require oxygen to function, disposable vape pen needs their e-liquid to work — after all, that is where the flavor is and the source of the cloud when you puff. If your disposable vape pen is not delivering enough hits when your draw, you should check how much e-liquid you have left in your tank. Top up if the level is low or change the tank if you are out — virtually every disposable vape pen cartridge/pots are removable. An empty tank may make your vape pen seem broken.

Is e-liquid escaping to the mouthpiece?

This can be caused by storing the vape pen sideways or upside down instead of sitting it upright. Allowing your vape to lye sideways can cause the liquid to escape into the vaporization chamber. When this happens, the atomizer will lose its ability to deliver big hits because of the chamber’s oil shortage. As such, pumping excess oil into your mouth when you pull.

Tip: Always refill your disposable vape cartridge at 45 degrees

Another instance of where you could be losing liquid is overtightening the vape pen threading (which could break the threading seal and cause oil to leak out) and during refill. Liquid can get into the middle chamber during refill and result in leakage. To avoid leakage, incline the pot at 45 degrees while refilling and avoid overfilling. Another tip is leaving small room for a vacuum at the top of the cart — it helps deliver great hits.

The Airflow Sensor Isn’t Sensitive

The vape flow sensor is another crucial component of a disposable vape pen, and it plays the vital role of activating the coil (the heating element) when you inhale. Once the sensor activates the heating element, it increases the temperature in the chamber to about 100–250 °C (212–482 °F) to create an aerosolized vapor which is inhaled instead of the usual smoke from cigarettes.

Having understood how the vape flow sensor works, you can imagine the role of the airflow sensor in disposable vape pens. The airflow sensor is designed to deliver a customized vaping experience by regulating the airflow going into the atomizer.

The job of the airflow sensor is to regulate the flavor payout from the chamber to your mouth. The idea is simple, the higher the airflow, the smoother the hits because the liquid vaporizes faster. However, you get to taste less flavor.

What low airflow translates to is more juice getting evaporated. In a nutshell, if the sensor isn’t sensitive to regulate airflow, you’re most likely not getting a satisfactory vaping experience and are probably running out of juice faster than usual. What is the solution? Get the airflow sensor replaced.

Disposable Vape Burned Flavor

If your disposable vape pen is pumping out burned flavor (disposable vape tastes burnt), it is a sign that there isn’t enough juice or e-liquid on the wick. When there isn’t enough liquid on the wick, it results in dry hits (caused by insufficient e-liquid on the wick) and burnt hits (caused by a combusted wick).

In the case of the former, the vaper gets less flavor and less exhales, while the latter delivers a mouthful of burnt flavor due to continuous vaping after getting dry hits — this can be unpleasant and harsh on the throat.

In addition to insufficient e-liquid on the wick, another cause of vape burnt flavor is incorrect wattage settings. You can fix this by:

Increasing the wattage —  increasing heat vaporizes the liquid faster and delivers better hitsTake a break when you experience a dry hitAllow the atomizer to get saturated before taking hits —  medium puffs between 15 seconds to 20 seconds interval works perfectly

Block the Airflow Vent

Blocking disposable airflow vent is one way of treating yourself to a pleasurable and memorable vaping experience. Blocking the airflow vent reduces the exposure or contact of the vapor coming hot out of the vaporizer with room-temperature air, as such, treating you to smoother and tasty hits.

How tight you want to block the airflow vent is dependent on your vaping style — if you vape Mouth-To-Lung (MTL), Direct Lung (DL), or you are a Cloud Chaser. It is always best to experiment and settle for what works best.

Break Air Bubbles

In addition to delivering disposable vape weak hits, having air bubbles in your cartridge or around the base of the wick hinders the absorption of e-liquid. What this translates to are a defective cartridge and an unpleasant vaping experience.

It doesn’t matter how hard you haul on the mouthpiece; if there are air bubbles around the wick, they make it almost impossible for the coil to function correctly — Thereby starving you of your desired vaping experience. Thankfully, there is an easy fix for this — break the air bubbles. How?

It is as simple as it sounds; blow hot air into the cartridge! If you do this correctly, you will notice movements as the concentrates heat up and liquefy. While that is happening, the bubbles should make their way from the bottom of the wick to the surface, where they’ll eventually pop/break. And voila, your problem is solved.

Dutch THR Advocates Urged to Submit on Consultation About Nicotine Pouches Ban

Health experts and entities in the Netherlands are calling out the local ineffective tobacco policy. Almost four years following the launch of the government’s extensive “smoke-free generation” plan, the number of young people who smoke has actually increased, highlight these experts. “Structural price increases for cigarettes have been proven to be one of the most effective ways to reduce smoking,” said Wanda de Kanter, a pulmonologist and anti-smoking activist.

She added that lobbying by Big Tobacco has led to the removal of structural price increases for cigarettes. To this effect, a ban on the tobacco lobby would be essential for any progress in tobacco control, said De Kanter. “This is the only way to keep the tobacco industry under control. Manufacturers are always trying to introduce something new, such as a vapor or vaping.”

The Tobacco and Smoking Products Act

Meanwhile the NL government is proposing a ban on nicotine pouches by bringing the products under the local Tobacco and Smoking Products Act. “This bill proposes to also bring nicotine products that do not contain tobacco and devices used to use such nicotine products (nicotine devices) under the Tobacco and Smoking Products Act. Non-tobacco nicotine products for oral use (such as nicotine pouches) will be banned.”

Countless studies to date have indicated the relative safety of nicotine pouches and their potential to help smokers quit cigarettes or at least reduce harm. Commissioned by BAT, the study titled, “Assessment of biomarkers of exposure and potential harm, and physiological and subjective health measures in exclusive users of nicotine pouches and current, former and never smokers,” tested this finding.

A research team consisting of a number of BAT employees, conducted a cross-sectional study in Sweden/Denmark, testing several recognised biomarkers of potential harm (BoPHs) linked to smoking among exclusive adult users of Velo and current/former/never smokers. The results indicated that as compared with smokers, exclusive users of Velo NPs have significantly less exposure to tobacco toxicants and more favourable BoPHs.
