According to foreign reports, the American Tobacco Free Children’s movement (ctfk) once again called for the prohibition of all flavored steam products after the food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected the marketing application of about 55000 flavored e-cigarette products.
Ctfk welcomed the FDA’s decision, but pointed out that this denial only involved a small number of flavor products reviewed by the FDA.
Ctfk president miles wrote in a statement: “today’s action will effectively reverse the popularity of e-cigarettes among teenagers, provided that FDA still rejects all applications for flavored e-cigarettes (containing spices other than tobacco) and high nicotine products (such as Juul), which will put children at risk of addiction.”
According to the 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey, 3.6 million children use e-cigarettes, of which nearly one fifth of high school students use e-cigarettes. Ctfk blamed the situation on flavored e-cigarettes. According to the organization, 83% of young e-cigarette users reported using spice products, and 70% of young users said they used e-cigarettes because of spices.
“To protect our children and end the popularity of adolescent e-cigarettes, the FDA should not authorize the sale of any flavored or high nicotine e-cigarettes,” Miles wrote.
The FDA must decide whether to approve the marketing application of e-cigarettes by September 9.

A group of renowned tobacco control researchers has endorsed vaping as an alternative to smoking.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Dr. Kenneth Warner, the Avedis Donabedian Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Public Health at the University of Michigan, has published a research review in the peer-reviewed American Journal of Public Health endorsing vaping as a less risky alternative to the smoking of combustible tobacco cigarettes.
Filter Magazine reports that Warner, with some of the most respected nicotine use addiction and tobacco researchers in the United States, has opted to endorse vaping and smoke-free nicotine delivery as a potential strategy to eliminate cigarettes. “Our concern is that much of the public health community—certainly the media, and very much legislators—haven’t really heard the other side of the story,” Warner told Filter reporters.
“Our hope, candidly, is given the origins of this paper, and the authorship of the paper, that it will draw some serious attention,” Warner said, speaking on the behalf of the author authors to the article published in the journal.
Besides Warner, experts like Raymond Niaura of the New York University School of Global Public Health or Neal Benowitz of the University of California San Francisco, are coauthors of the evidence review. Other researchers include Harry Lando (University of Minnesota), Nancy Rigotti (Massachusetts General Hospital), Robert West (University College London), Caryn Lerman (University of Southern California), among several other researchers.
“Opponents focus on e-cigarettes’ risks for young people, while supporters emphasize the potential for e-cigarettes to assist smokers in quitting smoking,” notes Warner et al in the abstract of the evidence review. “Most US health organizations, media coverage, and policymakers have focused primarily on risks to youths. Because of their messaging, much of the public—including most smokers—now consider e-cigarette use as dangerous as or more dangerous than smoking.”
“By contrast, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that e-cigarette use is likely far less hazardous than smoking. Policies intended to reduce adolescent vaping may also reduce adult smokers’ use of e-cigarettes in quit attempts.”

With public health officials, chemists, consumer groups as well as manufacturers joining in the conversation, the World Vape Show taking place in Dubai next month could go a long way to removing some of the question marks above the e-cigarette and vape market, which is expected to be worth USD 67.31 billion by 2027.
The combined exhibition and conference, taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre from 19-21 September, is as much an opportunity for those looking to kick the habit of smoking as it is for the makers of regulated products now meeting the demand for safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes.
Among the speakers at the Middle East’s only vape industry event will be South African Kurt Yeo, a former two-packet-a-day smoker for more than 20 years, who finally quit and co-founded Vaping Saved My Life, a consumer advocacy group dedicated to promoting tobacco harm reduction.
He will be in good company. Tobacco giant Phillip Morris International is sending its VP Global Scientific Engagement, Dr. Gizelle Baker, to take part in another of the panel discussions on
the future of vaping research and public health.
Dr Baker, one of two PMI speakers in Dubai, leads a team of scientists engaging and sharing the science behind the company’s smoke-free alternatives to grow awareness and understanding of tobacco harm reduction.

Dunne points to an assessment by Public Health England that vaping is 95% less harmful than tobacco based on more than 300 studies.

The tobacco giant has introduced a new addition to its IQOS line to the heated tobacco segment in Japan.
LAUSANNE — Philip Morris International (PMI), one of the largest tobacco companies in the world, announced on August 17 that the company has introduced the IQOS Iluma system to the ever-popular heated tobacco market in Japan.
“Our objective is a world without cigarettes; a world where cigarettes are replaced by smoke-free alternatives that are a better choice than continued smoking,” said Jacek Olczak, the chief executive officer of PMI, in a press statement.
“We have launched several generations of our IQOS heated tobacco system; expanding our portfolio to offer constantly improved, science-backed solutions that take advantage of advancements in technology and address pain points heard from consumers.”
“The launch of IQOS Iluma, our most innovative device yet, gives adult smokers another better choice and represents an important leap forward in our efforts to accelerate the end of smoking,” he added. The company said that it is offering two new devices to Japan: IQOS Iluma Prime and IQOS Iluma. According to Philip Morris, both devices use a new and improved induction technology but through different design experiences that “allow adult users to select the device that best suits their needs and preferences.”
“IQOS Iluma is our most innovative offering to-date and the new flagship in our portfolio of science-backed, smoke-free products,” said Michele Cattoni, the PMI vice president for heated tobacco platforms, in the same press release as Olczak’s statements.
“Its breakthrough induction-heating technology heats tobacco from within, without burning, so there’s no smoke, no ash and, like previous IQOS devices, it emits, on average, 95% lower levels of harmful chemicals compared with cigarettes,” said Cattoni.
Grand View Research, a market intelligence firm based in California, indicates that one of the largest markets for heated tobacco products such as the IQOS system is Japan.
“Asia Pacific held the largest heated tobacco products (HTPs) market share of about 73% 2018,” notes an analysis by Grand View. “It is driven by rise in consumption of iQOS brand heated tobacco products in countries such as Japan and Korea. However, stern regulations regarding the use of e-cigarettes may hinder the regional growth.

The government has a responsibility to do all it can to reduce the appeal of e-cigarette packaging to children.
This isn’t an old argument – the packaging issue anyway – but calling for flavour names to be banned is a new low IMHO.
I mean let’s face it no one seems to blink an eye at alco-pops and sweet flavoured beers and spirits.
Apparently the new calls for ‘bans‘ stems from a Kings College London study that suggested ‘kids‘ might be drawn to brightly coloured e-liquid packaging.
Professor Maggie Rae, from the university said:
The chief medical officer should take note of this research and urge the government to take powers to regulate e-cigarette packaging.
The widely available child-centred packaging of e-liquids in particular, which includes brightly coloured cartoon characters and sweet names such as ‘gummy bears’, ‘cherry cola’ and ‘bubblegum’ is unnecessary, egregious and must be stopped.
Of course in the blinkered eyes of these guys, adult smokers looking to quit don’t do flavours…I do like a nice flavoured gin BTW…and have been known to partake in the odd glass of cola…but hey adults don’t like ‘flavours‘ right?
However, Professor Linda Bauld from Edinburgh University, hits the nail on the head saying:
This new research suggests that taking action to regulate e-cigarette packaging could help decrease the appeal of e-cigarettes to children.
However, given there is still some confusion between vaping and smoking, it is essential that any packaging requirements make clear the distinction between e-cigarettes and tobacco products.
It looks to me as if ASH and Witty want to introduce plain packaging to all vape products similar to those now used with lit tobacco.
Australia was the first country in the world to introduce plain packaging, on lit tobacco and the UK brought it in back in 2017.
I really don’t want to see the same thing happen to vape gear and juice.

Professor Neal Benowitz is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, University of California San Francisco and this guy has forgotten more about nicotine than anyone else knows.
In an absolutely stunning study the Professor not only gives nicotine pretty much a clean bill of health, but says if vaping was taken up globally, the health benefits would be enormous.
The ‘Guru’ tag comes from pro-vaping advocate Dr Colin Mendelsohn who says the study is a ‘must read‘ for vapers.
The Professor’s findings includes truth bombs such as:
Nicotine per se is not harmless, but is much less harmful than combusted tobacco use. The effects of nicotine include ’pleasure, arousal and stimulation, and reduction of anxiety and mood stabilization’.
Of the nicotine that is inhaled from an e-cigarette, more than 90% is retained by the smoker so very little is released into the surrounding air.
ENDS products expose users to much lower levels of toxicants compared with cigarette smoking. Based on the far lower number and levels of potential toxins in ENDS aerosol, it is predicted that toxicity will be much lower than that of smoking, but toxicity will likely differ by device.

RELX is actively taking actions in cracking down on various vape brands that conduct infringement on RELX brand in China since June 2021.
On the one hand, RELX has recently won two lawsuits against similar trademarks. The two infringing trademarks are REIX and RELOOX.
The decision of Shenzhen Wuxin Technology Co., Ltd. to object to RELX’s similar trademarks announced by the State Intellectual Property Office showed that the result of the judgment was that both REIX and RELOOX constitute similar trademarks to RELX, and both were disallowed to be registered.
The State Intellectual Property Office determined that the registration of the disputed trademarks REIX and RELOOX belonged to similar products and constituted similar trademarks, and could easily cause confusion among consumers. Their application damaged RELX’s prior trademark rights and interests, so RELX’s trademark right claim was protected by the Property Office. While REIX and RELOOX constitute similar RELX trademarks, they’re not allowed to be registered.
On the other hand, RELX has started a litigation battle against three vape brands that produce RELX compatible cartridges. These 3 infringing brands include SP2S, VEEX and MAX.
The SP2S operating company was fined 200,000 yuan by the Shenzhen Market Regulation and Administration Bureau in May this year. The basis for the punishment shows that it may be suspected of illegally publishing advertisements.
From the information that has been disclosed so far, RELX has launched this year’s encirclement and suppression of RELX compatible cartridge vape brands. This is not the first time that RELX has sued a compatible vape brand for trademark infringement.
On June 16, VEEX, another RELX compatible cartridge brand, was sued by RELX for alleged unfair competition. RELX suing VEEX has not yet undergone a formal trial because VEEX filed a jurisdictional objection.
On July 2, RELX sued MAX in Hangzhou, claiming that it infringed its patent rights.
“One American Journal of Public Health article is proving to be a watershed moment in the vape debate. It has singularly pushed the World Health Organization to the complete outer when it comes to considered international opinion and research,” says Nancy Loucas, Executive Coordinator of the Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA).
CAPHRA’s comments follow 15 past Presidents of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) publishing an article titled‘Balancing Consideration of the Risks and Benefits of E-Cigarettes’ in the AJPH.
The authors state: ‘While evidence suggests that vaping is currently increasing smoking cessation, the impact could be much larger if the public health community paid serious attention to vaping’s potential to help adult smokers, smokers received accurate information about the relative risks of vaping and smoking, and policies were designed with the potential effects on smokers in mind. That is not happening.’
“The authors confirm what we’ve been saying all along: Overblowing youth vaping issues has only led to overall public health being harmed. This is because pressured politicians feel forced to reduce the appeal and availability of safer nicotine options, meaning fewer adult smokers successfully quit deadly cigarettes,” says Ms Loucas.
CAPHRA believes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) corrosive and corrupted view against safer nicotine products is forcing more and more prominent international experts to speak out.
Ms Loucas says this authors’ crystal-clear statement that ‘vaping can benefit public health, given substantial evidence supporting the potential of vaping to reduce smoking’s toll’ directly challenges the WHO’s determination to whip up baseless hysteria and ban safer nicotine products.
“Given the well accepted influence of billionaire foundations, like Bloomberg Philanthropies, on the WHO’s public health guidance, this latest intervention by the 15 former Presidents of SRNT is truly significant,” she says.
She says the individual authors’ credentials are exemplary. Further, SRNT is a globally respected organisation dedicated to evidence-based research on tobacco and nicotine use.
“The fact that this latest piece of work is receiving worldwide praise will be rattling the WHO. They know they’re on the wrong side of both the scientific evidence and ex-smokers’ successful experiences. The WHO is increasingly isolated defending their indefensible position against products which are saving millions of smokers’ lives every year,” she says.
CAPHRA says it is significant that the AJPH article has been backed up by an editorial from Martin Dockrell and John Newton of Public Health England (PHE), welcoming this latest work.
The PHE duo reinforce that: ‘These eminent authors conclude that the singular focus of US policies on decreasing youth vaping’ has been a distraction from the larger goal of tobacco control, namely reducing smoking and its harms’.
Ms Loucas says the SRNT article represents a significant line in the sand. It helps to rebalance the debate as well as highlight the mounting research proving the substantial benefits of adult smokers switching to vaping.
“Outrageously, for an organisation tasked with protecting the world’s public health, the WHO has been the key driver of misinformation on vaping. That has been detrimental to the health of over one billion adults who smoke globally,” she says.
Science has proven vaping to be 95% less harmful than smoking, so it’s beyond all belief that the WHO continues to try to banish the world’s most effective smoking cession tool, she says
“Thankfully, we’re seeing more experts in very high places calling for greater balance in the vape debate and for its benefits to be championed. The WHO’s poisoned positioning looks increasingly precarious,” says Nancy Loucas.

Consumer groups in the Asia Pacific region have also launched a petition at change.org/v4v-petition that urges the World Health Organisation (WHO) to respect consumer rights and to stop demonizing Tobacco Harm Reduction options ahead of the next biennial meeting of the WHO Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in November.
