Vaping Industry Applauds Biden Administration’s Reclassification of Marijuana

Share

Representatives from the U.S. vaping industry have expressed strong approval following the Biden Administration’s decision to reclassify marijuana. This significant policy shift is seen as a reflection of the administration’s openness to scientific evidence and constituent feedback.

Welcoming the Change

Tony Abboud, the executive director of the Vapor Technology Association (VTA), praised the decision for demonstrating the administration’s dedication to evidence-based policies. “The decision clearly underscores this administration’s commitment to listening to constituents and demonstrates a willingness to recognize and accept real-world, category-wide scientific evidence,” Abboud remarked in an emailed statement.

Call for Broader Implications

In response to this reclassification, the VTA is urging other agencies within the Biden Administration, especially the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to adopt a similar stance regarding vaping products. The association emphasizes that there is an “overwhelming body of evidence” supporting the effectiveness of vaping products as harm reduction and smoking cessation tools for adult smokers.

Critique of the FDA’s Current Stance

The VTA has criticized the FDA’s current approach, which they describe as prioritizing politics over science. This has reportedly led to the approval of over 650 new cigarette products in the past year alone. The association is calling on the FDA to align its policies with those of other agencies and to acknowledge the science supporting the benefits of flavored nicotine options for Americans seeking to quit smoking.

This push by the vaping industry comes at a pivotal time when regulatory attitudes toward both marijuana and vaping are shifting. The industry sees the reclassification of marijuana as a step forward in establishing more scientifically grounded regulations that could benefit public health.
