According to a report by Tnonline, the City Council of Slattington, Pennsylvania is considering amendments to the zoning ordinance related to tobacco, smoke, and e-cigarette shops. The proposed changes aim to address concerns about these businesses’ impact on public health and community welfare.
During a public meeting, the Brownie Squadron in Slayington presented a recommendation to the city council members, urging them to pass this legislation. There is growing support for regulating the location of tobacco and e-cigarette shops to protect the well-being of residents, particularly in areas frequented by families.
The Speaker of the House, Naomi Winch, expressed her concerns that these businesses could potentially undermine the efforts of family-friendly stores and promote unhealthy habits among the community. Hence, she supports the proposed regulations to control their establishment.
Under the suggested zoning changes, tobacco and e-cigarette shops would be restricted to industrial areas, ensuring a separation of at least 1500 feet from schools, churches, libraries, public parks, medical or health facilities, child care facilities, and residential areas. An additional requirement would be a mandatory minimum distance of 1500 feet between each tobacco or e-cigarette shop.
The city council unanimously voted in favor of passing this ordinance, indicating a collective commitment to safeguarding public health and the well-being of the community.
