On May 7th, according to Courthouse News, Senator Dick Durbin, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, publicly criticized the FDA for failing to effectively prohibit the unauthorized sale of e-cigarettes.
The Senate Judiciary Committee in the United States is set to hold a crucial public hearing on the issue of e-cigarette market regulation. The central theme of this hearing will be how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is executing its responsibilities in regulating e-cigarettes, particularly concerning the unauthorized sale of e-cigarette products.
The hearing is expected to take place in June, during which the FDA’s regulatory measures and enforcement efforts will be openly discussed and evaluated.
Durbin has requested Brian King, Director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the FDA, and Brian Boynton, Chief Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division of the Department of Justice, to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Durbin has long been a staunch critic of the unauthorized sale of e-cigarettes, accusing the FDA of serious lapses in fulfilling its duties. He previously met with Boynton and King in April to discuss enforcement issues.
Since September last year, Durbin has been exerting pressure on regulatory agencies like the FDA, informing FDA Commissioner Robert Califf that an investigation conducted by his staff found nearly twenty types of e-cigarettes being sold online without government approval.
This hearing marks a significant scrutiny of the FDA’s responsibilities in regulating e-cigarettes. The FDA spokesperson has not yet responded to Durbin’s request.
