Broughton’s Cutting-Edge Heated Tobacco Product Testing Facility: Empowering Safer Choices

Share

Broughton is set to enhance its influence in the next-generation nicotine market with the opening of a new heated-tobacco product (HTP) testing facility at its Oak Tree House site in Lancashire, U.K. This move aims to bolster the development and commercialization of reduced-risk alternatives to traditional smoking.

Cutting-edge Facility for Heated Tobacco Products

The dedicated space will be equipped with state-of-the-art testing apparatus including conditioning cabinets, smoke engines, and advanced analytical equipment. This setup will enable Broughton to provide comprehensive services ranging from product testing and characterization to toxicology and regulatory submission support.

Comprehensive Testing and Safety Assessments

Broughton will employ its facility to conduct detailed analyses on HTPs, checking for harmful and potentially harmful constituents based on the PMI-58 and other regulatory requirements. This ensures that the products meet high safety standards without major toxicological concerns. Additionally, the team will perform paper-based toxicological assessments to verify the absence of any high-concern ingredients or materials.

A Focus on Reduced-risk Alternatives

“Heated tobacco is an area of growing interest because it’s widely accepted that most of the toxicants associated with combustible cigarettes are caused by burning tobacco,” stated Chris Allen, CEO of Broughton. The new facility aligns with the company’s mission to provide smokers with safer alternatives, where the device heats the tobacco just enough to release nicotine without reaching combustion.

Expertise in Nicotine Product Safety

“Understanding the potentially harmful chemicals and the toxicological impact of a nicotine product is essential for marketing authorization,” explained Malcolm Saxton, senior consultant at Broughton. The new facility is designed to enhance Broughton’s ability to offer accredited, accurate, and flexible testing services throughout all stages of HTP product development.

The expansion into dedicated HTP testing underscores Broughton’s commitment to advancing safer nicotine delivery technologies and supporting manufacturers in navigating the complex regulatory landscapes of tobacco products. This strategic initiative not only positions Broughton as a leader in scientific consultancy and testing but also as a crucial player in the shift towards harm reduction in nicotine consumption.
